YOUR SUPPORT OF THE AUCTION:

- helps purchase next year’s project animals
- helps 4-H members continue learning and developing skills
- helps cover the cost of the expenses of raising livestock
THE 4-H LIVESTOCK PROJECT:
The 4-H Livestock Auction is the culmination of a 4-H member’s work for one project year. Members purchase steers by January 1, and lambs, goats, and swine by June 1st. They are weighed and tagged for market. This process begins the members’ market livestock project.
Throughout the year, 4-H members hand feed and care for their animals, attend educational workshops, and complete a Quality Assurance training program. They learn about keeping animals healthy and completing successful livestock projects. On the night of the 4-H Auction the projects end with the sale of 4-H project animals. After the auction, members look forward to the purchase of the next year’s project animal.
VIEW THE ANIMALS - All beef, lambs, swine, and goats to be sold display a 4-H ear tag and are marked for the auction. Your auction list will include those numbers. Prior to the auction, feel free to walk around, pick out your possibilities, and talk to the 4-H members who raised the animals!
ALL AUCTION PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY TO
4-H MEMBERS WHO RAISED THE ANIMALS!
CAN ANIMALS BE DONATED BACK TO THE COUNTY 4-H PROGRAM OR MEMBER AFTER I BUY THEM?
Yes! How does this work? The 4-H member receives the price of the animal at auction. Any animals “donated back” are typically sent directly to market. The designee to whom the animal has been donated will receive proceeds from the market.
Animals donated* back must go to (1) St. Mary’s County 4-H Program, (2) the 4-H member, or (3) a St. Mary’s County Chartered 4-H Club. All proceeds donated back to the County 4-H Program will be used to benefit 4-H youth through project workshops, scholarships, educational materials, and special programs.
*Donors should consult an accountant to determine any tax deductible value.
